Barbara Barker Rigsby passed away peacefully in the presence of her entire family February the 27th in Chattanooga. She was born in Chattanooga on July 4, 1930 to Sarah Gladys Payne Barker and John Winston Barker. She attended UTC, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi Sorority, an honor scholar and a recognized campus beauty. She celebrated her marriage to Larry Rigsby in 1949 at the Reed House. They had two children, Deborah and Larry, the loves of her life. She lived in Huntsville, New Orleans, Montgomery, and later Cullman.
Barbara was successful in everything she became involved with. From business to the arts. She wrote a weekly column Cooks Corner. She had a weekly television show Pot Luck, filmed in her kitchen. She wrote for many small magazines in the south. She judged cooking events, she gave speeches to clubs and churches. In her spare time, she began her first book Taste a Memory: A Collection of Loved Recipes; after which she did several smaller cook books and began her memoir Rise and Shine . She was in the process of writing another memoir which she jokingly called The Rise and Fall.
She was a member of the Stuart Heights Baptist Church, Daughters of the American Revolution, several historical societies and the National League of Pen Women.
She passed away peacefully in the presence of her entire family February the 27th in Chattanooga.
She is survived by her loving children Deborah Horn (Stewart) of Huntsville AL and Dr. Larry Rigsby (Virginia) of Chattanooga TN; grandchildren: Amy R McGhee of Daphne AL, Clay Rigsby (Jenny) of Ringgold GA, Racheal Horn of Ashville NC; great-grandchildren: Layne Rigsby, Clay and Hannah Rigsby, Virginia and Winston McGhee, Austin and Jacob Rigsby and Mathew Thomas.
Her greatest joy was her family. Her interest were many: Culinary History, Southern Fiction, Needle Work, Public Radio, and Fashion. She loved the beach, flowers, and classical music (violin solos). She loved her pets dearly: Fritz, Lollipop, Meiling, Scarlett O Barker, Muffin and Pete.
There will be a visitation 3:00-5:00 pm on March 1, 2018 at Stuart Heights Baptist with a service to follow. A graveside ceremony at 11:00 am (CST) on March 2, 2018 in Cullman City Cemetery, Cullman AL.
