Donald's Story

Donald Roger Clay, 81, passed away peacefully at home in Cullman on Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2017. He was born April 20, 1935, in Cullman County and was one of 12 children born to Kiah Lincoln and Eleanor Ferguson Clay.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Eleanor Richardson Clay; brothers, K.L. Clay, Charles Clay, James Clay and Billy Clay; and sisters, Margaret Clay Pittman, Rose Clay Lott and Joan "Judy" Clay Harbison.
Surviving Donald is his wife of over 15 years, Wanda Walker Clay; sisters Jacqueline Clay Willoughby, Deloris Clay Crider and Linda Clay Crider; stepchildren, Alan Walker, Tim Walker and Terry Walker; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. For many years Donald taught at the Cullman Vocation School as a welding instructor. He was a longtime member of Cullman First Church of the Nazarene. Donald especially enjoyed meeting for coffee for many years at the All Steak with friends to discuss politics and Alabama football. In 2001, Donald married Wanda Walker Clay and moved to Baileyton. Together they were active in the Baileyton United Methodist Church, which ministered to them throughout Donald illness. Donald enjoyed participating in the activities at the Baileyton Senior Center. He was a very gregarious person who loved life, always striking up conversations with strangers and friends alike. Donald was available any time for playing Rook with his many friends. He will be especially missed by his 12-year-old Shih Tzu, Princess.
The family would like to extend special gratitude to the staff of North Alabama Hospice and especially caregivers, Heath Privett and Brenda Harden.
Visitation will be from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, at Moss Service Funeral Home.
Funeral services for Donald Roger Clay will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, Debra Moon officiating, with interment following in Walker Memory Cemetery, Jasper.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Baileyton United Methodist Church, Baileyton Senior Center, or the charity of your choice.
