Funeral services for Herbert "Herb" Black, 79, of Crane Hill, will be at 2 p.m. Sunday May 14, 2017, at Cullman Heritage Chapel, the Rev. Anthony Clark and Rev. Floyd Bradford officiating, with interment in Mt. Grove Cemetery in Blountsville. He passed away May 11, at his residence.
Cullman Heritage is directing.
Born Monday, Oct. 4, 1937, he was the son of the late Thomas and Lorene Smith Black.
Herb Black was a supervisor at Teledyne Brown Engineering in Huntsville, where he worked in development of the Sky Lab and Saturn 5 programs. He later moved on to Wallace State Community College in 1973 setting up the machine shop program and curriculum. He built the program into a successful training regiment, giving hundreds of students good paying jobs for life. He helped by bringing new industries into the Cullman area.
Surviving are his wife, Iris Kretzschmar Black; daughter, Jackie (Jim) Cruce; son, Ricky (Peggy) Black; grandchildren, Amanda (Alex) Clark, Jaime Cruce, Justin Cruce, Heather (Seth) Kuykendall, Rena (Allen) Putman; great-grandchildren, Makenzie Cruce, Zayden Cruce, Acelyn Cruce, Tucker Putman, Doston Putman and Eason Putman; brothers, Verbon (Lynette) Black, Travis (Suzie) Black and Keith (Sandy) Black; sisters, Laudine Shaw and Bobbie Whatley; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Roger Black; and sister, Hollis Loyd.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
