James M.'s Story
James M. Speeker Jr., M.D., 71, quietly passed away Feb. 22, 2017, at Hanceville Nursing Home.
Jim is survived by his wife of 44 years, Donna Speeker; daughters, Beth (Chandler) Cruit, M.D., and Virginia Strickland, M.D.; brother, Lane (Rachel) Friedman, M.D., and five grandchildren, C.J., Amelia and Adelle Cruit, and Charlotte and Bennett Strickland.
Dr. Speeker was born in Birmingham, where he graduated from the old Shades Mountain High School. He joined the U.S. Air Force in the late 1960s where he was trained as an X-ray technologist and served in South Carolina, Texas and Taiwan, Republic of China. A graduate of the University of Arkansas, where he met his wife, Dr. Speeker worked as a forensic chemist for the State of Arkansas before being admitted to the University of Alabama School of Medicine.
He graduated in 1981, and practiced family medicine in both Jefferson and Cullman counties. He loved his grandchildren's visits, enjoyed reading, snow skiing, golf and bicycling, but was confined to home in recent years.
Dr. Speeker was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Friedman of Birmingham; father, James Malcolm Speeker; and stepfather, Louis L. Friedman, M.D.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 24, at Hanceville Funeral Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hanceville Funeral Chapel, with interment at a later date in Alabama National Cemetery in Montevallo.
