Former Cullman resident, Mary Elizabeth Huffstutler McLeroy, 88, peacefully passed at Heritage Hospice in Marietta, Georgia on December 21, 2017 at 4:10 a.m. She was born November 25, 1929 to Edd and Agnes Huffstutler. She graduated from Cullman High School in 1948.
Mary began working an an Operator for Southern Bell Telephone in Birmingham, Alabama. She then married John McLeroy on February 10, 1951 at the age of 22. He preceded her in death on February 2, 1966.
Throughout her 42 year tenure with the Bell Companies, Mary worked as an Outside Plant Clerk, Assignment Clerk, and Supply Serviceman, where she was the first woman in Cullman to take the Serviceman job. She then retired on February 7, 1993. She then joined her only daughter, Rebecca McLeroy Watwood and Charles Watwood in Marietta and Roswell, Georgia. She cherished the time she helped raise her two grandchildren Hannah Watwood and Chad Watwood.
Mary was a member of Longview Church of God in Vinemont, Alabama until she moved to Georgia. She the faithfully attended and served at Town Center Community Church in Marietta, Georgia until her passing. Her church friends in Georgia lovingly referred to her as "Mary Alabama".
Mary was preceded in death by her father and mother, Edd and Agnes Huffstutler, her brother Donald Huffstutler. She is survived by her sister Joan Huffstutler Brandon of Vinemont, Alabama. Also she is survived by her daughter Rebecca McLeroy Watwood of Roswell, Georgia and two grandchildren Hannah Watwood and Chad Watwood.
There will be a graveside memorial service at Cullman County Cemetery at a future date.
