Dr. Robert Linsey Echols, 70, of Cullman, Ala., passed away unexpectedly Monday, September 3, 2018 surrounded by his beloved family. He was born July 11, 1948 to Robert Abercrombie and Marie Brantley Echols in Selma, Ala.
He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Carol Holleman Echols; sons, Jonathan (Leslie) Echols and Blair (Leigh Ann) Echols; grandchildren, Ethan, Addie and Nolan Echols; sister, Debra Echols Turner (Curly, deceased); brother-in-law, John Albert (Angie) Holleman.
Bob was affectionately known as "Doc" to many and never met a stranger. He was a gifted physician that helped countless people in his 44 year career in medicine. Bob graduated from W.P. Davidson High School (1966), Auburn University (1970), and the UAB School of Medicine (1974).
He served as an elder at Cullman Church of Christ and spent much of his free time enjoying his grandchildren. He was an avid storyteller and hunter of all things wild. Bob was a selfless servant and helping anyone in need. He was board certified in Emergency Medicine and worked in Birmingham at Cooper Green Hospital and UAB. He worked as an Emergency Room physician for the past 23 years at Cullman Regional. Countless patients and families were blessed by his uncanny ability to diagnose and treat with an unforgettable humor, love and compassion. Bob worked in medical missions in Guatemala and Honduras, and locally helped start the Good Samaritan Clinic. He leaves behind a lasting legacy of service.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on Friday, September 7, at Cullman Church of Christ with the funeral beginning at 12 p.m. There will be a private family burial in Montgomery on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested contributions be made to the Cullman Church of Christ Missions.
