Anthony "Tony" Benchina, 70, of Tampa, Fla., passed away Friday, Jan. 27, 2017, after a courageous four-year battle with lung cancer. He was born Dec. 15, 1946, in Timmins, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Florida from Cullman in 2012. Tony graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in 1970 and was a family practitioner. He practiced in his hometown of Timmins for seven years and 34 years in Cullman. He loved learning, reading, traveling and ballroom dancing. He was very proud of his Slovenian heritage. Tony was a member of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Matilda Benchina.
Tony is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Anna Marie Susie Benchina; two daughters, Katie (Jeff) Olsen and Tara (Charles) Calise; granddaughter, Olivia Olsen; brothers, Joseph and Edward (Frances); brother-in-law, Peter Grills; and sisters-in-law, Cathy Goldman, Margaret Nicholson and Joanne Bodnar.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the mass.
The family would like to thank Dr. Scott Antonia and all of the staffs of the Thoracic Oncology and Clinical Trial Units and the researchers at the Moffitt Cancer Center. Many thanks to all of Tonys friends and former patients for their ongoing support.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Tony's honor to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Cullman, St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church Building Fund, St. Vincent DePaul or Moffitt Cancer Center (Thoracic Oncology Unit).
