Funeral services for Rondal Curtis Mize, 79, of Cullman will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017, at Cullman First Baptist Church, Rev. Tom Richter officiating. Interment will be in Cullman City Cemetery.
Moss Service Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Curtis died June 3, at Brookwood Medical Center. He was born Jan. 10, 1938. He was a devoted father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He enjoyed giving of his time and talents to various church and civil activities. He retired from NASA in 2005 after 46 years of service.
Curtis graduated from Auburn University in 1960 with a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering. He worked on many of the major NASA programs including Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, Skylab, Shuttle, Spacehab, and many other science-related missions. Curtis also loved music and was a member of the Chancel Choir at First Baptist Church. He loved playing the piano. Curtis enjoyed arranging flowers as a "hobby" and did this for weddings, funerals, banquets, etc.
Curtis was the president of the Auburn University Alumni Association's Cullman Chapter. Through his leadership, the club was able to achieve many awards from the university. During his tenure as president, the club grew in membership and has been able to endow multiple scholarships to the university that are awarded annually to students from Cullman County.
His other community involvements included working with the Cullman Senior Mrs. Pageant, NARFE, Cullman County Sheriff's Office, driving a bus for various school and church groups, serving as a deacon at his church, helping in the children's ministry at First Baptist for over 45 years, and going on many mission trips.
Curtis was preceded in death by his wife, Sara Vandiver Mize, of Cullman; his parents, Herbert and Pearl Mize of Good Hope; his brother, Edward Mize of Good Hope; and his sister, Onie Mize Sharp of Grand Blanc, Mich.
Survivors include his children, Lindy (Ben) Hale of Birmingham and Ron (Beverly) Mize of Huntsville; a brother, Noel (Robbie) Mize of Cullman; and two sisters, Lynda (Chyron) Mize Wood of Opelika and Kristine Mize Henke of Good Hope. Curtis has five grandchildren, Curt (Jennifer) Mize, Abbie Hale, Keith Mize, Sara (Skylar) Hale Murphy and Grace Hale; and two great-grandchildren, Benjamin Murphy and Leah Mize.
