Wilbert Ernest "Bert" Bedard, 89, of Cullman died Wednesday April 5, 2017. Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, April 9, at Moss Service Funeral Home, Pastor Todd Henderson officiating, with interment in Cullman City Cemtery. Viewing is 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born in Brockville, Ontario, Canada, Bert was the son of (the late) Robert Bedard and Rita Pearl Smith Bedard Nichols. He joined the army at the age of 19 and served overseas where he met and married Rozelle Estes from Cullman in 1947. Rozelle left home at the age of 18 to work in civil service in Washington D.C. and was transferred to Europe. They met and married in Vienna, Austria. They later came back to the States and lived in Ogdensburg, New York, for 15 years before relocating to warmer weather in Cullman. In his early years in Cullman, Bert was known as "Yank" and he never lost his Yankee accent. When he moved to Cullman, he managed the Phillips 66 station a number of years, then continued working for Valley Oil Company and then Williams Service Company. He worked until he was 80 years old.
Bert had a love for building, fixing, refinishing all things imaginable for his backyard, family and friends. He had a knack for projects and always had one in progress. He could do anything from mechanical, electrical to carpentry and then some. He was always willing to help anyone with anything at any time.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Rozelle Estes Bedard; son, Eddie (Sara) Bedard; daughters, Carin Braswell and Lisa (Richard) Forrester; grandchildren, Maria Bedard, Chrissie Gardner, Heath Bedard, Zachary Forrester, Emily Forrester, Kristin (Johnathan Prickett) Forrester, Amy (Jamie) McClain; great-grandchildren, Brody Forrester, Tess Gardner, Evy Gardner and Fitz Gardner.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bert Bedard Jr.; brother, Robert Bedard; and son-in-law, Floyd Braswell.
Friends may make donations to Cullman Regional Medical Center Foundation.
