Cullman, Alabama - Hazel Kathryn Levering (nee Lewis), better known as Kay, passed away recently. She is survived by husband, Paul Levering and sons, Steve (Pam) Levering and David (Katina) Levering.

Kay was born in Stockton, Calif., to Jim and Hazel Lewis, and was raised in Tulsa, Okla. She was musically inclined and involved herself with the high school marching band and chorus. Kay spent her college years at John Brown University in Siloam Springs, Ark., where she studied music.

While attending John Brown University, she met Paul Levering, a mechanical engineering major. They dated for a while and eventually married in 1963.

Paul and Kay moved several times for Paul's career and lived in Arkansas and Pennsylvania before finally settling down in Cullman, Ala., where they lived for more than 40 years.

After Steve and David graduated from high school, Kay attended Wallace State Community College, where she studied to become a legal secretary. Following graduation, she worked at several law firms in the Cullman area.

Kay enjoyed traveling, especially to the New England area or to see the autumn leaves. She also enjoyed listening to music, looking at antiques, and spending time with family and her cat, Coco. She was a loyal member of First Baptist Church in Cullman, and treasured the friendship, support and community she received from church members and leadership.

She often marveled about her broadened horizons, saying, "I never thought a girl from Oklahoma could do all of this." She did, and she will be missed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Gideon Memorial Bibles or the Cullman First Baptist Church Building Fund.

A celebration of life will be from 2-3 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2024, at First Baptist Church, 501 2nd Ave SW, Cullman. Visitation will be held at the church from 12-2 p.m. prior to service.
