Hanceville, AL - Janera Carter Sayle, age 86, passed away on May 15, 2025, in Hanceville, Alabama. Born on October 5, 1938, Janera was a lifelong resident of Alabama and an esteemed figure in her community through her dedication to music education and her church.

Janera graduated from Cullman High School in 1956 and furthered her education at the University of Montevallo, where she completed her undergraduate studies. She went on to receive a Master's degree in Music from Peabody College at Vanderbilt. Her career was marked by her significant contributions as a Choral Music Director at both Cullman Middle and High School, and as a Choir Director at the First Presbyterian Church in Cullman, Alabama.

Known for her determined spirit, Janera was also a talented musician and possessed a spunky personality that endeared her to many. She was deeply committed to her church, serving and leading choir at the First Presbyterian Church of Cullman, where she was a beloved member.

Janera's hobbies included traveling and spending cherished moments with her family. She was grateful for the excellent care provided by Hanceville Nursing Home and Southern Care Hospice in her later years.

She is survived by her sister, Dora Carter Tekulve (John); daughter, Shanda Lonkhurst (David); son, Carter Sayle (Soothawee); and grandchildren, Emily Lehew (David), Zachary Sayle (Carly), Daniel Lonkhurst, Logan Sayle, and Reid Sayle. Janera was preceded in death by her parents, Watson and Era Jane Carter; brother, Neal Watson Carter; spouse, Ervin E. Sayle; and partner, Wilson Henderson.

A memorial service will be held later this summer to honor Janera's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association in memory of Janera Sayle. Her life's work and passion for music will be remembered by all who knew her.
