Cullman, AL - It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing on May 26, 2026, of Gay Barber Voss. Gay was born on October 31, 1950, and raised in Florence, Alabama. She graduated from Vanderbilt University and pursued a career in journalism. Her first newspaper job was in the Florida Keys. Later, she joined the Decatur Daily newspaper and rose to be a section editor. It was in Decatur that she met her husband and joined with him to pursue his corporate career. She continued to work in journalism and public relations throughout her life. A lifelong bird-watching enthusiast, she added birds to her life list wherever they lived or traveled, including birds on four continents. Meanwhile, their marriage was blessed with two children.

When she moved with her husband in 2000 to Cullman, they finished raising their children and she immersed herself into the culture of Cullman. From historic walking tours, cemetery tours, the origins of the Sacred Heart Church stained glass windows, and 10 years teaching 5th grade Sunday school, with particular interest in her Hispanic students, Gay contributed to her community.

In Gay's latter years, she was privileged to devote her energies to the raising of her two granddaughters and especially her elder granddaughter, Virginia. At the same time, Gay endured the tribulations of Parkinson's Disease with the utmost character and dignity, characteristics she always sought to infuse into her family. Her love of family will always be in our hearts.

Gay was preceded in death by her parents, James Corbet and Frances Partin Barber. She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Michael Voss; children, Frances Voss and Alex (Andrea) Voss; grandchildren, Virginia Voss and Lilian Corley; and sisters, Ann Barber and Beth (Jeff) Nabors.

A mass of Christian burial will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, May 29, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Gay's brother-in-law, Rt. Rev. Marcus J. Voss, O.S.B., as principal celebrant. There will be a visitation in the church an hour before the funeral mass. Memorials are requested to be made to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research or the charity of your choice.
